I have met a few people in my career who are excellent at their jobs, at all levels of the organisation. What I know to be true is that it is possible for you to be in a role at the same level for years and be supremely competent and happy with no desire to progressing to the next level. I have met and appreciated these individuals not only for what they have brought to their roles but also what I have learned from them personally.
On the other side of the coin, I have also seen examples where we promote such individuals and they fail to perform at the level they have been promoted to. Why wouldn’t we promote? they were excellent examples of talent that we want to nurture and retain in an organisation. If I have learned one thing in my career to date, it is that not everyone aspires to be promoted or should be promoted. It is perfectly ok for you/someone to be a superstar and shine exactly where they are.
